Assignment #2: 'How wet met', 'Shop Local' or 'Leisure'.
'By this time next week you are to have shot work for one of the following:
How we Met:
It’s widely acknowledged that introducing a second or third person to a portrait shoot
can make the process either a whole lot easier or a whole lot more demanding.
Taking the Independent’s ‘How we Met’ as inspiration you are to make a portrait of two
people who know each other very well, who have a professional or personal bond –
don’t con us with your selection and don’t photograph your sister, brother, mother,
father or lover!
Of course, in your supporting work on your blog, you’ll need to show you’ve explored
editorial portraiture – every week there are 100s of commissioned portraits being shot
and across a range of publications, from broadsheet to specialist magazines. Who’s
shooting this work?
Shop Local
Produce a three-picture story of a small local shop, one with some character. Of the
three images, one must be a portrait of the owner; at least one must be landscape
(wide) and one portrait format (tall). The accompanying shots must reinforce the nature
of the shop.
In your supporting work you’ll need to show you’ve explored editorial features – what
range of subjects are being covered, who publishes this work, does some of it fit with
your own interests?
Leisure
Produce a portrait of a sportsperson, accompanied by one additional detail shot that
reinforces their ‘sport’. Your definition of sportsperson can be wide; it might be a
Mountain-biker, Archer, Gymnast or even Hiker.
Use the location to help emphasise the activity and the same with the detail but also
make this an image that is photographically interesting/intriguing.
What titles sports and leisure titles are there?
On your supporting blog you need to show you’ve explored work and publications appropriate to this brief.'
Our second brief allows us to chose from the above three titles, giving us a week to create what is needed. I have decided to focus on the 'Shop Local' theme due to the broad options available within Manchester. I do not classify myself as a portrait photographer at all and therefore feel that the other two options would be less appropriate for me.
The leisure route is a possibility, if I can think of and contact anyone appropriate, this is due to the fact it could lead to more landscape opportunities. However, 'Shop Local' would challenge me to approach the public and to work in conditions I am not used to and the theme is the one which appeals to me most of all.
